Guide To EduCity, Iskandar, Malaysia: Undergraduate Programmes, Course Fees, And Amenities

EduCity is located in Iskandar Puteri, a booming township in southern Johor.

 

Regardless of where you live, there’s no doubt that education is one of the most important building blocks of success. During our undergraduate studies, we gain knowledge and skills that can help us secure jobs and achieve financial stability.  

When selecting your undergraduate university, there are many things one needs to consider. This includes the programmes offered, accreditation, fees, curricular activities, location, and more.  

If you’ve not heard, EduCity in Iskandar, Johor is an educational hub that houses multiple local and international universities in one place across 305 acres of land. Some of the universities on the EduCity campus are wholly-owned branches of institutions based in the UK with programmes that are recognised internationally. 

EduCity offers students a comprehensive set of amenities that include hostel and apartment-style accommodations, athletic facilities, research centres, and other services. Aside from that, EduCity’s location in Iskandar Puteri means that students will be able to access international airports, healthcare services, and myriad recreational landmarks easily.  

How Much It Costs To Study At Universities In EduCity

Many Malaysians aspire to study abroad and experience cultural exchanges in a foreign country. According to Ministry of Higher Education data, 70,000 Malaysians were abroad for their education in 2019.  

However, you don’t necessarily need to locate overseas in order to have an overseas education. Within EduCity, there are five partner universities offering undergraduate programmes namely Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed), University of Reading Malaysia, Netherlands Maritime University College, Raffles University, and Kolej MDIS Malaysia.  

NUMed and University of Reading are institutions operating in the UK. Partnered with EduCity, these universities opened up branches on the EduCity campus, providing Malaysians with programmes that are similar to those offered in the UK but at a more affordable price and without needing to travel overseas. EduCity also collaborated with local universities which are Raffles University and Kolej MDIS Malaysia.

From the table above, you can see that tuition fees for international students are higher than Malaysian students. 

There are many financing options available both by the government and private bodies. Students in Malaysia can apply for an education loan with the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN). Upon graduating, you can repay your loan with a flat 1% interest. 

In addition, students or parents can make EPF withdrawals from Account 2 to fund your education as well. Otherwise, students may try to apply for scholarships or financial assistance directly with the universities.    

Application Process For Studying At EduCity

Students can apply online or fill up manual forms with necessary documents including identification card, academic transcripts and certificates. Then, your application will be reviewed. Once it’s approved, you will receive an offer letter from the university.  

Application process for international students is a bit more complicated. Aside from the usual application steps, you will have to also apply for a student visa through an agent or directly with the government. Foreign students also have to ensure that they have met the required levels of English proficiency to study in Malaysia.   

Student Amenities Available In EduCity

All amenities on the EduCity campus are shared among students regardless of the university they’re attending. This also means that you get to meet students outside of your institution.  

In EduCity, students have the option to stay in either hostels or apartment-style rooms, priced from RM500. There are also accommodations that family and friends of students can rent for short-term stays to help students transit to a new stage in life.

City Conveniences Outside Campus

When choosing your university of choice, it’s important to factor in the location as well as you will probably be spending a few years there. EduCity is located in Iskandar Puteri, an integrated urban development that’s popular for its residential properties. It offers convenient access to Singapore via the Malaysia-Singapore 2nd link and access to direct ferry service to Batam in Indonesia. 

In fact, one of the largest attractions in the country, Legoland, is situated minutes away from EduCity. There is also top-notch medical care available at the Columbia Asia Hospital and The Gleneagles Medini.  

Malaysia is aspiring to become a regional education hub, hoping to pull in 250,000 students from around the world by 2025. EduCity provides local and international students with an overseas education that comes directly from branches of universities in the UK at an affordable price point. With multiple universities on one campus ground, a variety of amenities were built including short-term accommodations for visiting family. In addition, EduCity is only a 20-minute drive from Senai International Airport. Students can access the Tuas link bridge to cross to neighbouring country Singapore.
