Every year, from around June to August, durian harvesting reaches its peak in Malaysia. Durian is one of the most widely cultivated crops in the country, with high-quality fruits being exported to Singapore, Hong Kong, and China.
Due to the hot and dry weather experienced earlier this year, durian trees are fruiting later but at a higher frequency, resulting in an increased yield. From a cost perspective, the abundance of crops could lead to more affordable durians.
Some of the highest quality durians in Malaysia come from plantations in Raub, Pahang, which is renowned for its Musang King variety, as well as from Johor and Penang.
How Much Do Durians Cost In Malaysia?
Durian prices vary significantly depending on the variety. Popular types such as Musang King, Black Thorn, and Red Prawn tend to be more expensive than regular kampung durians.
As the durian season extends over a few months, demand may decrease towards the end, potentially resulting in lower prices if you purchase them later in the season.
To determine the cost of durians in Malaysia, we examined the prices of fresh, husk-free durians from six sellers in the Kuala Lumpur area.
